Coco Gauff continues to impress as she rallied past Ukrainian qualifier Yuliia Starodubtseva to reach the semifinals of the China Open, winning 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. After a slow start, Gauff found her rhythm in the second set, saving two break points early on and breaking Starodubtseva to take a 3-1 lead. From there, she lost only three more games, showcasing her resilience.
Gauff’s next challenge will be against Paula Badosa, who earlier defeated local wild card Zhang Shuai in a 6-1, 7-6 (4) match. Badosa has been on a roll, winning 28 of her last 35 matches and making the semifinals in three of her last five tournaments, including a strong run to the US Open quarterfinals last month.
Zhang’s impressive journey at the tournament came to an end, having entered the event on a 24-match losing streak. Despite her struggles, she made a remarkable comeback this week, not dropping a set in her first four matches. However, she couldn't match Badosa’s intensity, especially in the first set, where Badosa made quick work of her with three service breaks. The second set was a tighter affair, with Badosa facing an early deficit but rallying to clinch the tiebreak and secure her spot in the semifinals.
As Gauff and Badosa prepare to face off, fans are eager to see how this matchup will unfold, showcasing the next generation of talent in women’s tennis.
