Mateo Kovacic was on target twice as Manchester City emerged 3-2 winners against Fulham in a match that has produced the first victory for the City in their three games in the Premier League. City came out of the blocks flying like usual, but it was the Cottagers to draw first blood; Andreas Pereira getting on the scoresheet thanks to Raul Jimenez’s backheel.
Fulham could have increased their lead further though in particular, Adama Traore failed to make several clear-cut opportunities; one being saved by Ederson one-on-one and another was a clearly regarded shot in the wrong side of the bar from close range. Fulham was a little careless in creating the chances in the first half and saw all of them go begging but Kovacic made them pay, scoring his first from a deflected shot from a corner before adding his second with a great shot soon after the restart.
Despite, City looking to even cruise after the brilliantly taken goal by Jeremy Doku made it 3-1 to the home team, Fulham enjoyed a late consolation goal by Rodrigo Muniz. However, City managed to cling on to ensure they won all their home games to become the first English team ever to secure fifty home games in all competitions.
This match confirmed that Kovacic and Ilkay Gundogan are also relevant in the midfield substituting the team’s main midfielder Rodri. City fans expressed their support for Pep Guardiola, whose future with the team is still rather vague, seeing he has yet to extend his contract with the team.
Fulham, however, after the opening goal brought a lot of creativity to the LOS procession despite the defeat. Everton must feel they could have come away with all three points after dominating large swathes of the match against a well-organized and resolute Boro side, although Silva will be frustrated by missed chances, notably from Traore. They leave sixth in the leagues, however, after only their second loss for the season.
